The Hollywood Arts Collective is a new arts complex in the heart of Hollywood. The complex comprises two buildings—The Cicely Tyson Residential Building and The Rita Moreno Arts Building—that together will provide affordable space for performing arts and entertainment professionals to live, work and create. The complex will house the new Glorya Kaufman Performing Arts Theater, open opportunities in creative careers for underserved youth in the neighborhood, preserve a home for long-time tenant of the former space LA Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), and host the Western Region Headquarters for the Entertainment Community Fund. The Fund is grateful to development partners Thomas Safran & Associates and Kingdom Development.
The Cicely Tyson Residential Building, opening Summer 2023, will provide much needed affordable housing for low-income people in the entertainment industry. The naming of The Cicely Tyson Residential Building was made possible thanks to a generous $5 million contribution by Jane Friedman on behalf of The Gerald J. & Dorothy R. Friedman Foundation. The Tyson Building will provide more than 150 units of affordable housing with an artist preference to serve the performing arts and entertainment community. The building will include 20 studio units, 70 one-bedroom units, 40 two-bedroom units and 22 three-bedroom units. The Tyson Building’s residents will also have access to three gardens, a fitness room and a soundproof rehearsal studio for resident performers.
“Hollywood wouldn’t be what it is today without the diverse, hard-working, creative professionals in the arts and entertainment industry,” said Keith McNutt, Executive Director of the Western Region of the Entertainment Community Fund. “We’re thrilled to be working with Thomas Safran & Associates and Kingdom Development to make The Hollywood Arts Collective a reality.”
Brian Stokes Mitchell, Chair of the Fund, shared “The Cicely Tyson Residential Building and The Rita Moreno Arts Building will stand as enduring, vibrant and aspirational testaments to the essential place creative people play in our community, our economy and the future of Southern California.”
“Hollywood Arts Collective is an exciting new affordable housing development we are proud to bring to Los Angeles,” said Thomas Safran & Associates President Jordan Pynes. “We are thrilled to partner with the Entertainment Community Fund in developing this housing opportunity for those involved in the arts.”
The Entertainment Community Fund’s Applying for Affordable Housing at The Hollywood Arts Collective seminar helps participants get organized and prepared to apply. The application process is explained in simple steps and the seminar helps applicants avoid common mistakes. Information regarding assessing income, eligibility criteria and documentation is discussed to address the specific needs of the performing arts and entertainment community. The first session begins on December 12, and the seminar will be repeated throughout December, January and February.
